Mereba's Community School
In 2015 UCT was asked by community leaders to help them to set up a nursery school because their children did not have access to education. The nearest school was too far for young children to walk and school fees were unaffordable for most of the community. Few people had any regular income. There were many orphans in the community who were looked after by elderly relatives and guardians. The school opened in a single room with a soil floor, no seating or basics such as chalk boards for the teachers. Seating for the children was made by cutting down trees, chalk boards were home made from plywood and ash mixed with plant juices. The school is now housed in a permanent concrete and iron roofed building. Each of the three year groups has their own classroom. Since the school opened in 2015 over 200 children have progressed through nursery level education at Mereba and been able to access Primary schooling.
